Fire at the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine

A fire broke out on the night of Saturday, June 20 to Sunday, June 21, 2020, in the grounds of the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of the State University of Haiti. According to the first estimates made by the dean of this entity, Jocelyn Louissaint, in shock, met on the spot, "more than thirty offices, computers, filing cabinets containing administrative files and others" passed under the flames of this fire, the origins of which have so far failed to be established.

The ground floor of one of the buildings fitted out for the presentation of students 'memories, the professors' office, the photocopier service, the directions of different study departments, as well as the statistics and IT unit, and other, all these spaces have been destroyed. "We lost a lot of equipment ...", deplores the dean Jocelyn Louissaint, who described a disaster which leaves a great shock for the institution which, despite the crisis situation caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19), continued, in a certain limit, to continue its academic and administrative activities towards this community of students.

"We cannot yet argue that it is arson or accidental fire. We have no evidence to support this. We do not want to support the hypothesis of an electric shock since there was no electricity in the area before and after the fire, ”said Dean Louissaint, who assured that the institution will put everything in wiggles to continue operating.

Met at the scene of the fire, the vice-rector for academic affairs, Hérold Toussaint, spoke of his "sadness" over the fire at FAMV. He regrets that the tragedy occurred at a time when the State University of Haiti is facing financial difficulties. “We will see how the rectorate will help to manage the situation. We will have to appeal to national and international solidarity ”.

Firefighters have already been on-site to try to limit the damage. For now, officials are continuing assessments to determine the extent of this tragedy hitting this institution which is trying to recover from the serious consequences of the devastating passage of the earthquake of January 12, 2010.
