About 5,700 deaths will be mourned, and the country will need 7,500 hospital beds

Haiti could have 313,000 infected people, 5,700 deaths between late April and August 2020

Faced with the spread of coronavirus in Haiti, forecasts are becoming increasingly worrying. After an analysis of the country's situation by experts from Cornell and Oxford Universities, the best scenario predicts about 313,000 cases of Covid-19 contamination, or 35% of the Haitian population, between the end of April and August 2020, reported the Dr. Jean William Pape.

About 5,700 deaths will be mourned, and the country will need 7,500 hospital beds to deal with the epidemic, according to Dr. Pape, co-chair of the multisectoral crisis management commission, in an interview with the daily Le Nouvelliste.

Other darker predictions by scientists report 20,000 deaths and 426,000 Covid-19 patients. So it will be necessary for the country to have 9000 hospital beds available. 86% of the Haitian population may be progressively affected by the disease.

To avoid the worst, Dr. Pape relies, to some extent, on press participation in raising public awareness as part of a strategic communication plan that will soon be made public. In addition, he believes that some oxygen availability is therefore needed in care centers.

In the face of the pandemic, the country enjoys an advantage, with its low percentage of individuals over the age of 65. Yet, Pape pointed out, many cases of co-morbidity exist in Haiti and many Haitians suffer from high blood pressure.

Jean William Pape called for solidarity to deal with this disease whose speed is spreading the world. He called on political actors to suspend political fighting in order to converge much more effort towards the fight against Covid-19 which has already killed 5 people and contaminated a total of 72 in Haiti.
