5 Things You Should Know About Haiti’s Carnival This Year

Haiti’s edition of Mardi Gras will be happening this weekend. Here are 5 things you should know about it.

1. When…what…where…
The three day celebration will take place on February 7th, 8th, and 9th in Port-au-Prince.

2. Historical ties.
The first day of the celebration is also a historical date in Haiti. February 7, 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the departure of Haiti’s one-time prez Jean-Claude Duvalier.

3. Haiti’s carnival 2016 theme emphasizes the perennial.
Ayiti Toutan…Haiti Forever is the theme of the carnival.

4. Milestone.
Haiti Kanaval 2016 marks the first time in Haiti’s history that a president releases a carnival song. The carnival song in question entitled Ba Li Banann [Give ‘Em Bananas] is sung by Haiti’s president Michel Martelly.

5. You can be there…even if you’re not there. strong>
If you can’t make it to Haiti (school, price of ticket, etc), you can keep up with the carnival with the website Plezi Kanaval, created by Carel Pedre, a media personality based in Haiti.
