Haiti’s edition of Mardi Gras will be happening this weekend. Here are 5 things you should know about it.
The three day celebration will take place on February 7th, 8th, and 9th in Port-au-Prince.
2. Historical ties.
The first day of the celebration is also a historical date in Haiti. February 7, 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the departure of Haiti’s one-time prez Jean-Claude Duvalier.
3. Haiti’s carnival 2016 theme emphasizes the perennial.
Ayiti Toutan…Haiti Forever is the theme of the carnival.
Haiti Kanaval 2016 marks the first time in Haiti’s history that a president releases a carnival song. The carnival song in question entitled Ba Li Banann [Give ‘Em Bananas] is sung by Haiti’s president Michel Martelly.
5. You can be there…even if you’re not there. strong>
If you can’t make it to Haiti (school, price of ticket, etc), you can keep up with the carnival with the website Plezi Kanaval, created by Carel Pedre, a media personality based in Haiti.
